Toy Showing Study for Adult Dogs

1+ year old dogs w/ adult owners (no child involved)

The study procedure is composed of two parts: Part 1 is done over 2 days for approximately 10 minutes each day, and Part 2 is done over 2 days for approximately 15 minutes each day. For Part 1 of the study, you will be asked to play with your dog for 5 minutes an hour before the second adult is expected to arrive home, and then record your dog when the second adult arrives home. For Part 2 of the study, you will be asked to repeat the same procedure, except this time you will also be asked to play with your dog using a new toy. After completing the consent form, you will be redirected to our lab's website where you will find the instructions on how to complete the study on your own without a researcher present.

We are investigating whether dogs will show a new toy to their owner who has not seen the toy. The aim is to determine whether dogs 1) show their new toy to their owner simply to share attention to it with them or 2) give their new toy to their owner to get them to play with it.

10-15 minutes per day for 4 days

Within a month of completing Part 1 of the study, you will receive a $14 Amazon e-gift card via email from Amazon.com (or, an equivalent, £10 Amazon e-gift card from Amazon.co.uk) to be used to purchase two new dog toys. The two new dog toys will then be used for Part 2 of the study. One e-gift card will be provided per dog that completes Part 1 of the study.
