Who's a Better Friend?

This study will take place on a video call, live with two researchers. This video call will take around 15-30 minutes. Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. During the study, you will be asked to take a seat on a chair and put your baby on your lap. Your baby will be presented with videos about puppets interacting with one another. They will engage in different types of interactions including prosocial or antisocial behaviors. We will record your baby’s looking patterns to measure their understanding of their social interactions, and more broadly, social relationships. You will be with your baby at all times. You will also be asked to fill out a consent form, that can take 5-10 minutes total, which will be emailed with a link to you before your scheduled time.

This study is about how infants understand and learn about the social relationship. We specifically aim to investigate what influences infants’ understanding of others’ social relationships. Previous research has shown that infants understand that others' antisocial behavior can change their relationships, but it remains unclear how prosocial behavior influences those relationships. This study will contribute to our understanding of how infants perceive the impact of various social behaviors on social relationships.

After the Zoom session is completed, we will email you a $5 (USD) Amazon gift card (redeemable only at Amazon.com). To receive this compensation, the following criteria must be met: (1) You are located in the United States, (2) your child is between the selected ages, (3) your child is not premature (4 weeks earlier than the due date), (4) your child has not participated in this study before, (5) you provide valid written consent before the scheduled time, (6) your child is visible on the webcam in a valid consent video and during the study. Each Infant is only allowed to participate once and receives only one gift card. If eligibility criteria are met, you will receive this compensation within a week of your participation. You will still receive this compensation even if your child does not finish the entire study. Your child’s performance will not impact whether they receive compensation or not.
