Making friends based on voices!

We are looking for 2 groups of children: 1) German-English BILINGUALS, and 2) French-English BILINGUALS. By bilingual we mean that your child is conversational or has basic proficiency in two or more languages. We are looking for child participants that are 6 to 12 years old.

In this study, children will listen to different people and tell us what they think. They will look at faces, listen to voices, and be asked who they want to be friends with. After the friendship task is complete, parents/caretakers will be asked some brief questions about their and their child’s language background.

We want to learn more about how children choose to make new friends. We know that when adults listen to people talk, they constantly make assumptions about the people speaking. But we know comparatively little about how different accents influence children's perceptions and judgements. We are particularly interested in how language background and exposure influences these friendship preferences.
