How do children think about their social network? This is a surprisingly hard question to study because children's real-life social networks (such as their classrooms) are ever-changing and hard to measure accurately. Here we ask how children think about the fictional, yet rich social social network in the children's show Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. This show depicts a host of complex relationships and social groups, including family, peers, community members, neighbors, and more! We are curious if children who watch the show pick up on these relationships, as well as whether they can use their knowledge of these relationships to reason about the characters in the show. For instance, do children think that unrelated characters might learn things about each others through a mutual friend? |
