What do we think about best friends?

Children aged 6 to 9 years

During this study, your child will watch short videos introducing four different pairs of best friends high-fiving, and will answer some questions about what they think of their friendships! We will ask if they think characters actions are okay, and also if they would like to be friends with the characters. We will also introduce a fifth pair of friends, and ask if it is possible for one character to also have many other best friends!

We are interested in whether children think there are limits to the number of best friends we can have! This can help us understand how they think about friendships, and how children use this information when deciding who to be friends with. We know from previous research that children don't have unlimited numbers of close friends, and also that they can get jealous when their friends have other friends! This study will help us understand more about these situations, and how children use their understanding to judge people who have different numbers of best friends.

Within a week of completing the study, you will receive a $5 Amazon gift code (Amazon.com) by email once we verify your consent video, and that your child is in the correct age range. To be valid, consent videos need to show the caregiver of the child who is participating. Your child should be visible during the study. Only one gift card per child is available.
