Baby Learning Patterns

For babies who are 11 months 15 days to 12 months 29 days and who are learning two or more languages (Each language must be spoken to your baby for at least 10% of their day)

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. During the study, your baby will watch some videos containing an animated baby and hear some silly new words.

Babies can learn a lot of patterns from their environments, and this ability is important for their language development. This study tries to find out whether babies can learn certain patterns from speech, and how their language experience may play a role in this process. Studies have found that bilingual babies learn patterns in a more flexible way compared to monolingual babies. We would like to find out whether this is true across different types of patterns. Furthermore, the structures of the language they hear can influence pattern learning too. We would also like to find out whether babies hearing different languages can learn patterns at a similar rate. Learning what influences babies' pattern learning can help us understand how this develops and how it may be used for later language development.

To be eligible for the gift card, your baby must be in the age range for the study, your baby must primarily hear English or Spanish at home, you need to provide a valid consent statement, we need to see that there is a baby with you during the study, and this needs to be the first time that your baby is participating in this study. But we will send a gift card even if you do not finish the whole study or we are not able to use your baby's data. There are no other direct benefits to you or your baby for participating, but we hope you will enjoy the experience.
