Autism Development Study

Children between the ages of 3 and 12 years are eligible to participate in this study. The study includes children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD). For children with ASD, parents may be asked to provide information or documentation confirming their child’s diagnosis. Children must be able to participate in virtual activities conducted in English, and a parent or legal guardian must be able to provide consent for participation.

Children will participate in four 30–40 minute virtual sessions scheduled approximately every 6 months. During each session, a trained research team member will guide your child through fun and interactive activities focused on language, storytelling, social understanding, and learning. Children may listen to stories, answer questions, solve problems, share ideas, and complete activities related to communication, emotions, and early academic skills. Sessions are designed to be engaging, supportive, and developmentally appropriate for children with and without autism.

The purpose of this study is to better understand how language, social understanding, and thinking skills develop in children with and without autism over time. We are especially interested in how skills such as storytelling, understanding emotions, perspective-taking, and communication may support later learning and academic development. By learning more about children’s strengths and developmental pathways, we hope to improve knowledge that can inform future supports, educational practices, and interventions for children with and without autism and their families.

Participants will complete study activities across four time points over the course of the study, scheduled approximately 6 months apart. Each time point includes approximately three virtual sessions with a trained research team member. Sessions are expected to last approximately 30–60 minutes each. The first time point will also include parent onboarding and informed consent procedures.

You will receive a $20 Virtual VISA gift card after your child completes all four sessions. This study has 4 time-points, therefore, your child can earn up to $80 in VISA gift cards if they continue to participate in each of the time-points. You can expect compensation 1-2 days after completion. The following conditions are required to receive compensation: your child fits the requirements for the study (listed below) and the child must be visible and participate in assessments.
