Match the puzzles!

Match the puzzles!

Leonard Learning Lab (Yale University)

Who Can Participate

For 6- to 8-year-old children.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you.

In a live video call with a researcher, children will play up to 10 matching puzzles where they get to guess which shape matches the pattern in the puzzles. Participants will then answer a series of questions about different scenarios, such as how children might want to communicate to their peers about the puzzle games.

What We're Studying

Children are active social learners: they look to the people around them to learn more about what they can and cannot do as well as how others perceive them. Prior research shows that children are motivated to maintain their reputation and self-image in front of their peers. Here, we are specifically interested in learning about how social comparisons might change what children choose to disclose about their own performance in front of their peers (e.g., children may choose to tell their peers that they played a game independently rather than share that they received adult help). Ultimately, this work will help to inform how children learn about themselves and make future decisions that can influence their learning and motivation!

Participants will be asked for their email and compensated via e-gift cards (e.g., Giftogram). Participants can expect to receive the e-gift card between 1-2 weeks after the time of the online appointment. To be eligible for the gift card: (1) your child must be in the age range for this study, (2) English is (one of) your child's first language(s), (3) you need to submit a valid consent statement during the appointment, and (4) we need to see that there is a child with you during the appointment. Each child is eligible to participate to receive a gift card only once; participants cannot do this study more than once for compensation.
