Learning About Novel Animals

For 4- to 7-year-olds

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. During this study, your child will hear about pairs of novel animals. For each pair of animals, your child will listen to and see two different pieces of information about the novel animals provided by two teacher characters. After listening to and seeing the information for each pair of animals, your child will be asked to 1) identify which teacher character they prefer and 2) provide information about the animals they just learned about.

Previous research shows that children rely on information from other people when learning about unfamiliar things, but less is known about what influences children's evaluation of different types of information. In this study, children will hear different pieces of information about novel animals from two teacher characters and will indicate which teacher they prefer and what they learned. This study will help us better understand how children evaluate and learn from new information.
