Comforting in Friendships

Comforting in Friendships

Harvard Lab for Developmental Studies (Thomas) (Harvard University)

Who Can Participate

For 6- to 8-year-olds who are based in the U.S.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. In this Zoom-based study, we are interested in how children think about comforting and helping in friendships. We will show your child different stories about characters interacting with each other. We will ask your child questions about the characters and what will happen next.

What We're Studying

In this study, we want to understand if children have expectations about comforting and helping in friendships. Specifically, we are curious about if children believe receiving a hug or help is more effective when coming from a friend rather than a stranger. We think children will believe that receiving help from anyone will make you feel better, but you will only feel better if you receive a hug from a friend.

Children will receive a $5 online gift card and an optional certificate of participation, if requested. To receive the gift card and certificate, the child must be within the age range for our study. Each child will only receive one gift card. We can compensate participants with an Amazon or Target gift card within 1-2 business days after completing the study. We'll ask you about what gift cards work for your family, and we'll work with our lab manager to get you a suitable gift card.
