Rules and Closeness

Rules and Closeness

Harvard Lab for Developmental Studies (Thomas) (Harvard University)

Who Can Participate

For 4- to 7-year-old children

What Happens

In this study, your child will see stories about people and shapes learning rules in different settings. In some worlds, children learn about a new object called a “Blicket” and decide where rules about not touching it come from. In other worlds, groups of circles and squares learn not to do a new behavior called “daxing”, sometimes with a sign reminding them of the rule and sometimes without one.

What We're Studying

We are exploring how children understand formal and informal rules and how they connect rules to different social contexts. Specifically, we aim to learn how children reason about when rules are explicitly stated versus implicitly understood, and how visual or social cues shape their understanding of rule-following and social relationships.

Within about a week of completing the study, you will receive a $5 amazon gift code (Amazon.com) by email once we verify your consent video, that your child is in the correct age range. To be valid, consent videos need to show the caregiver of the child who is participating. Your child should be visible during the study. Only one gift card per child is available.
