Cognitive Development Lab (Loyola University Chicago)
Who Can Participate |
Infants aged 12 months, who are exposed to English. |
What Happens |
Your baby will watch short videos of a woman speaking and stop motion toys. The videos will either have matching or non-matching soundtracks. For example, the words that your baby is hearing may or may not match the woman’s mouth moving. This part of the study will take up to 10 minutes. After this portion of the study, you will receive an email inviting you to complete a survey about your baby, their personality, and family health history. For example, we will ask about how much interest they show in new people/objects, their activity level, and how they react to sensory experiences. The surveys will take up to 30 minutes to complete. |
What We're Studying |
We are studying how infants’ attention is impacted by different types of information, such as whether the audiovisual clips are social (i.e., people) or nonsocial (i.e. objects), and whether the audio and visual portions of the clips are presented synchronously (matching) in time or not. We are investigating how certain patterns of audiovisual presentations may be more attractive to infants’ attention. This portion may take up to 10 minutes. We are also interested in how infants’ attention may be impacted by early aspects of their personality and their family health history. Surveys will ask questions about how infants behave in their everyday lives and about the history of different health conditions within the extended family. Altogether, these surveys are estimated to take up to 30 minutes. |
