What Do Babies Know About Sand?

Harvard Lab for Developmental Studies (Harvard University)

Who Can Participate

For 4-to -to 6-month-old babies

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you.

What We're Studying

Babies seem to understand that solid objects hold together, but it’s less clear how they think about things like sand or water. In this study, we show babies short videos of block or sand, then test if they are surprised when something behaves in an unexpected way—like not splitting, when it should. We want to learn how early babies start to understand the difference between solid and non-solid things.

Durée

The study will complete within a 10 minute video chat.

Compensation

A $5 Amazon.com or Starbucks.com gift card will be emailed to the parent, and participation is welcome from families all over the world. The baby needs to be in the age range and to be visible during the experiment. It will take about a week to receive the gift card.
