Who Can Participate

Children ages 6 to 8 years who speak English

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you.
During the session, your child will complete several short listening and memory activities. For example, in one activity your child will hear two words and say whether they sound the same or different. In another activity, they will listen to a series of numbers and repeat them back. In a third activity, they will listen to short pieces of music and decide whether they sound the same or different or whether they have heard them before.
At the end of the session, parents will answer a brief set of questions about their child and family, such as age, language and music exposure, parent education, and general background.

What We're Studying

Researchers know that skills like memory and listening play an important role in children’s learning and development. Musical experience may also be related to these abilities, but we are still working to understand how they are connected.
In this study, we are examining how children’s listening skills, memory, and musical abilities are related. By using activities that involve listening to words, repeating numbers, and comparing sounds and music, we aim to better understand how these skills develop during early childhood.

Compensation

Families who participate will be entered into a random selection for one of ten $20 Visa gift cards. Recipients will be selected after data collection is complete and notified by email. To receive the gift card, selected participants will be asked to respond to a brief follow-up message. The odds of receiving a gift card are approximately 1 in 15.
