How Do You Think They Feel?

Child Learning and Development (CHILD) Lab (University of Southern California (USC))

Who Can Participate

For children that are 3 to 5-years-old who are learning English at home. Participants must be located in the United States and hearing English speech at least 40% of the time. Each child may only participate in this study once. Your child needs to be visible during the study.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works best for you. In this research study, your child will listen to several stories and be asked to match emotion words to the story they hear (i.e. "Daniel is playing in the park and is riding on his favorite thing: the swings! How do you think he feels?").

What We're Studying

We are interested in learning more about three- to five-year-olds' understanding of labeling and categorizing multiple emotions happening at one time. It can be hard for children to understand that you can feel more than just one emotion at a time, especially when it comes to labeling how they feel. Our study aims to examine how language tools like providing some emotion word labels may help support children's understanding of having multiple emotions at the same time. If words are helpful, we hope this can help us discover if and when kids can use more than one emotion or feeling word at a time to talk about a complex situation that makes them feel both happy and sad!
