EArly Social Thinkers (EAST) Lab (The University of Chicago)
Who Can Participate |
For 6- to 10-year-olds |
What Happens |
In the first part of the study, you and your child will talk about 4 science fields. General prompts will guide your conversation as you talk about what the field is, and how people achieve success in those fields. In the second part of the study, your child will answer questions about the same fields, as well as the people working in each field. |
What We're Studying |
Parents play an important role in shaping children's understanding of the world. We are interested in how parents and children talk about a variety of STEM fields to better understand how beliefs about science develop in children. In this study, we are investigating how parent-child conversations might influence children's beliefs about each field. The study will help us understand how children form perceptions of various academic or professional domains, and how parental language may influence children's interests, beliefs, and aspirations related to these areas. |
Duración |
20 minutes |
Compensación |
Participants will be emailed a $5 (US dollars) Amazon.com gift card by the following Monday after finishing the study. To receive the gift card, the child must be between the ages of 6- to 10-years-old, and both the child and the parent must be visible during the entire session. One parent and child per family can participate and receive compensation only once. |
