Number Word Comparison

Number Word Comparison

Cognitive and Developmental Neuroscience Lab (University of Massachusetts Amherst)

Who Can Participate

For 3- to 9-year olds who are native English speakers or who speak English on a regular basis and with typical hearing.

What Happens

In this study your child will help some animals who love collecting human things like coins, bags, and forks! Your child will listen as two animals say how many objects they were able to find. Your child will decide which animal has more by clicking on the winning animal.

What We're Studying

Number words can be relatively simple (ex. "nine") or complex (ex. "nine hundred billion"). We are interested in how children learn about the structure of more complex number words. For example, do children pay attention to the first number said (ex. "nine" in "nine hundred billion") or the largest number said (ex. "billion" in "nine hundred billion")? Understanding how children learn about complex number words will help scientists and teachers design new and potentially more effective math education practices.
