Children's thinking about disagreement

Children's thinking about disagreement

Social and Moral Learning Lab (University of Wisconsin-Madison)

Who Can Participate

For 6- to 9-year-old children

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! By clicking the “Participate Now!” button, you’ll be directed to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. In this study, your child will see cartoon characters and hear short stories about them. Each story will involve two characters who have disagreements over a topic. One of the character would choose different ways to resolve the disagreement. Then, your child will be asked some questions about what they think about these characters (e.g., "Do you think this character's action is good or bad?").

What We're Studying

There is evidence that children realize that people sometimes have different ideas over an issue. However, in general, we know little about how children think about different ways of dealing with these disagreements when people who are in conflict are friends. This study explores how children think about different ways that friends deal with disagreements. Studying these questions will help us understand children’s social and cognitive development and could inform efforts to support children’s reasoning and relationship-building skills.
