How many hidden toys can babies remember?

For babies age 6 to 14 months

In this study, your baby will watch different numbers of toys being pointed at and labeled in different ways (such as "one, two, three" or "this, this, this") before being hidden behind a box. We are interested how babies' memory of hidden objects responds to these differences. Your baby will sit in your lap during this study.

Babies are constant observers of the world around them, and they hear count words as early as a few months of age. But do babies know that counting is about quantity? And if so, what about counting (e.g., does it have to be "one, two, three"?) draws babies' attention to quantity? Your baby's reaction to our "counting" videos will tell us what types of activities draw babies’ attention to quantities, and will ultimately help scientists understand where our concept of counting comes from.

To be eligible for compensation we ask that you 1) provide a valid consent video (we will show you how!), 2) your child must be in the age range specified above and, 3) your child must be present during the recorded videos. Your child does not need to finish the entire study in order to be eligible for compensation.
