Which Way Will Your Baby Go?

Which Way Will Your Baby Go?

SaxeLab (Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT))

Who Can Participate

For toddlers ages 9 to 14 months.

What Happens

During this study, your child will watch a short, animated video. The video will show short clips of walking through colorful, maze-like rooms, and we will record where your child looks as they watch the animated video.

What We're Studying

The study is the first part in a series of studies aiming to understand how babies learn to navigate their visual world. For example, do babies know the difference between an open doorway they could “walk” through, versus a painting or a window that they could not walk through? And do babies only learn this difference once they’ve started walking around themselves? Answering these questions could help us determine how much knowledge babies are born with, and how much they learn through experience.

At the end of this study, we will provide a link to a second experiment (completely optional) which explores children's experience with their visual environment. If you choose to participate in this second study, you will receive 3 texts a day for 5 consecutive days, asking what activity your child is doing. Participants can start their 5 days any day of the week. Participants in this study will receive a $15 Amazon gift card, redeemable at Amazon.com. You can decide whether or not to participate in the optional follow up study at the end of the first study, and your participation (or not) in the second study does not affect participation in the first study. Additional information will be provided with the second study link.
