Understanding Maternal Involvement Today

Understanding Maternal Involvement Today

Family Development Lab (University of California, Merced)

Who Can Participate

17-25-year-old college students and their mothers/female guardians

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you.

During the session, you and your college student (ages 17-25) will each fill in some online surveys about how you view yourself and how you experience parenting and being a mother/college student. Then, you will have a conversation with each other about planning a vacation and what you will do in the future. Finally, you will play two online games (an online Etch-a-Sketch you will play together and an online Tangram game your college student will play themselves).

Note that you will need two internet-connected devices to participate: one needs to be a computer with a camera, but the other could be a smartphone or a tablet.

What We're Studying

The purpose of this research study is to learn about mothers and teens/young adults and how they experience their relationship. We are hoping to learn about how mothers and teens/young adults interact with one another when discussing various topics and doing challenging tasks together in an online context. Doing these tasks online will help us expand research on mothers and teens/young adults to families who may not live near universities or other places where research typically takes place. We want to learn about mothers' and teens'/young adults' thoughts and feelings about themselves and their relationships by asking questions about their general experiences and their reactions to the discussions and games.
