How Do You Think They Feel

RUN Child Development Lab (Rutgers University - Newark)

Who Can Participate

For 6, 8 and 9 year olds

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. In this study, your child will be read a series of short stories, and after each story, they will be asked to indicate how they think the character in each story feels and explain why they think that.

What We're Studying

Children are exposed to various inputs from their social environment that could have implications to how others are feeling. The current study is broadly aimed at understanding how children interpret others' emotional states. Specifically, we want to explore if they preferentially base their emotional state judgments on certain cues, e.g., facial expressions, over other cues, e.g., speech content, and if this pattern changes during the course of development. This could provide us with great insights into children's socio-emotional development.

Duration

25 minutes

Compensation

A $10 Amazon.com e-gift card will be sent to your email address within a week after the completion of the study. In order to receive the compensation, your child must be in the age range for the study, they need to be visible during the course of the study, and we will send out one gift card for each child that participates.

This study is conducted by Dr. Vanessa LoBue (contact: tianyu.hu@rutgers.edu).
